Question by sKy…..: Academic writing????
What is academic writing?
Answer by constantreader
I’m sure you will get some highly toff-ish answers to this, but in my opinion [and based on personal experience/exposure to university life as student, post-grad and instructor] academic writing is the kind done under the guns of “publish or perish” when angling for tenure or advancement. Academic writing is by its nature & requirement as opaque as possible, as obscurely pedantic as can be fashioned, and should not be confused with original literary material. Academic writing is circular, in that good little wannabes replicate their professors’ style & take off from their footnotes to spin some of their own in slavish adoration. Done thoroughly enough, you eventually wind up with a cup in the faculty room’s cupboard…done sincerely and with brio, you might wind up a department head. Academic writing is to real writing as military band-music is to the philharmonic [thank-you, Sir. Thomas Beecham [PBUH]]. If you have to read it three times to glean a kernel of information you could actually make use of, it’s academic writing.
