Question by Anseo: Need help on ideas for political dissertation?
This is a very broad question but i really do need help.
I need a topic to write my political dissertation on.
The topic can be anything political, it can be from something from US foreign policy to Sierra Leone politically stability, to the history of german nationalism in the post-war era, etc.
However as this is a major task l will be undertaking, it needs to be something i am interested in. My interests primarily are international relations and dipIomacy. Ideas that i have been toying with include the question of ‘Israel as a rogue state?’, Comparing the Upper house of ireland to other states Upper Houses, the history of the rise of challenger political parties in America with a close examination of the Tea Party,
So anyway, the most important thing is that it needs to be interesting and innovative? Something no one has really written about before? So any suggestions?
Oh and it doesnt even really have to be political, it can be social, economic, anything really, thanks!

Open a newspaper, local, national and international, read a few books, use the database journals at your disposal and wander the thesis dissertations in your College Library. Review and research PHD papers, review specific journals and articles = this is all part of the process of your dissertation and what is expected of you.
I’m sure that you’ll soon be able to see what topics have been covered over the last number of years, come across some ideas that you can further on (with credit to original author) from something that inspires you. You have a huge amount of topics at your disposal just from Irish, European and general global media alone, particularly at such high political and economic times such as now. Maybe even have a look at what’s being discussed on forums like politics.ie if you’re really stuck for inspiration (although if it’s an area of interest, you probably already know about it), look at activist groups and see what issues are in discussion and debate and just research topics that are of interest to you. and make sure it’s genuine interest too, because it will be easier to research with enthusiasm that you mind can really get into.
Keep an eye on some topics that the news/prime time/other shows do cover stories on, for example, 6.01 news covered Latvia who were in a similar situation to where Ireland is now economically but have dug themselves out of a situation and it touched lightly on the political side too.
From my thesis days, this was the done thing. You should have a lecturer assigned to you to hone in on if a topic is too broad or too narrow in focus and have updates for them on your progress; but the most important thing is to know exactly what you are going to research and write about to the point of nailing it down by yourself with your own ability and knowledge and interest and learn the hard way.
