Question by pond: Recommendations for a thesis statement?
I had to write a research paper discussing telecommunication and the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I talked about how the telecommunication and technology in Fahrenheit 451 is similar to todays. My teacher gave me the paper back and said I need to have a thesis statement. Can someone help me with this?
<333 Webster's dictionary defines telecommunication as the broadcast of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication. The initial means of telecommunication took place through simple things such as smoke signals and drums. Since then technology has grown leaps and bounds. For example we can now send information across the world, via e-mail, lightning fast. In the novel "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury the seashells and wall televisions are eerily similar to advancements such as the iPod and big screen televisions. The telephone, which is one of the most common household appliances today, has been improved since it's creation in the 1800s. In 1970 the design for modular phone cords and jacks was presented. This design led the way for the modern telephone jack. The microcomputer kit also reached the market in the 1970s making computers available for home use. This was just the beginning of a world full of personal computers. In Fahrenheit 451 people watch giant televisions that take up entire walls. The televisions are enormous because they substitute interaction with other people. Comparable to the "wall televisions" are the massive plasma televisions we have today. In 2006 there was an 103 inch television presented at the Consumer Electronics Show. Another similar technological development is the iPod. The "seashell radios" in Fahrenheit 451 are used to listen to music and waste away time much like iPods are. Over the past twenty years there has been numerous breakthroughs in telecommunication so the next twenty can only bring more advancements. Scientists predict that in the future humans will be implanted with microchips. Perhaps they will be used to monitor daily activity in the future. Another prediction is that the internet will be completely free and ubiquitous. The world will do away with cash money and use electronic financial transactions in the future. As one can see telecommunication is an ever evolving technology. The advancements made in this area change the world we live in. Fahrenheit 451 showcases what happens when technology takes over daily lives. Whether or not our future is as bleak as the ultramodern world of Fahrenheit 451 is up to us and how we utilize our technology.

A thesis statement helps you to focus your writing and organize your paper. One possible thesis statement for your paper is:
The telecommunications presented in the Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 are similar to today’s telecommunications in the way that they substitute for interactions with other people and encourage people to waste time.
Then your essay should be reorganized with an introduction (the thesis statement often goes at the end of the introduction), one part (or paragraph) about category one (substitute for interactions with other people), one part (or paragraph) about category two (wasting time), and a conclusion.
Each part should have a topic sentence so that the reader knows that they’re up to that part of the essay, as introduced in the thesis statement. (e.g. “Another way the telecommunications presented in the Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 are similar to today’s telecommunications are in they way that they help people to waste time.
